The world and the various environmental factors that exist are regularly probed, prodded, surveyed and reported on in terms of weather reports, global warming (or cooling) phenomena and more.
The sea surface temperature (SST) is monitored from satellites and ships at sea. Land and atmosphere temperatures are similarly reported and recorded.
It is an extensive use of temperature sensors of all types (satellites, of course, use non-contact sensors to read the earth surface).
This page is here because there are so many temperature sensor measurement results reported regularly on the Web about these aspects of sensor use that it would be silly to not at least mention them.
Note, too, that the dominant types of temperature sensors used for more than the last 100 years are variations on contact temperature sensors. Often they are very special sensors with wind and radiation shielding, but they fundamentally depend upon contact with air and have the requirement that they be in thermal equilibrium with air to measure precisely.

One of our recent finds is the Vaisala Group’s Lightning Information webpages. It’s about real-time lightning and more around the world in a cool graphic interface, not about temperature, but it’s a pretty neat web page, IOHO.
Also, the USA’s National Weather Service (nws.noaa.gov) publishes a wide variety of information and education online about Lightning Science and Safety as well as the USA National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN) Data Sets.
