Some Thermoelectric-Related Publications and Presentations of R. P. Reed, Ph.D., P.E.

In the large body material on thermometry that exists in the technical literature are many obscure papers related to thermocouple temperature sensors and their use. Many of the more substantive papers reside in specialized technical publications, journals, proceedings of technical meetings and reports.

Many of the papers are not readily accessible in general technical libraries. Fortunately, significant historic scientific and technical books and copies of individual papers are still maintained by, and are available to all from, the Linda Hall Library of Science, Engineering, and Technology, 5109 Cherry Street, Kansas City, MO, 64110-2498, USA , www.lindahall.org.

Ray Reed is an author who has noted commonplace inconsistencies in historic accounts of thermoelectricity and significant misrepresentations of principles of thermoelectric thermometry at all levels of technical sophistication.

Listed here is a bibliography of those of his publications that relate to thermoelectricity particularly as applied in modern thermocouple thermometry circuits. His publications cite many still-relevant historic papers.

His prolonged interest in thermoelectric thermometry was incidental to his primary occupations as a researcher in shock wave phenomena and measurement as a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff (DMTS) at Sandia National Laboratories, and at Southwest Research Institute, and at the University of Texas, and later as a measurement consultant.

As an active member of the ASTM E20 International Standards Committee on Thermometry he was a chairman of the subcommittee on Fundamentals and was active on Thermocouple, Terminology, and other sub-committees.

In cooperation with colleagues at NASA, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory he advanced the technology of Seebeck Inhomogeneity measurement. With Willard Bauserman, NASA, and at the suggestion of Rad Carroll of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, he developed a practical high resolution test method using a liquid metal Gallium Indium Tin eutectic alloy as an immersion medium.

Sensitized to the commonplace occurrence of Seebeck inhomogeneity and resulting consequential obscure error in industrial thermometry and calibration, he developed an authentic, simplified, universal “Functional Model of Thermoelectric Circuits” to aid in the understanding, recognition, and avoidance of thermoelectric problems in thermometry as performed with modern circuits of all complexity.

  2. We just got a copy of the preprint to this paper from Dr. Reed and have created a pdf file and linked it to the reference paper on his list of publications herein.

  3. I am interested in obtaining Reed’s 1990 paper entitled “Traceability–The Golden Calf” but there is no link provided for its entry here, and it does not come up in a search of the Linda Hall archive.

    If you can point the way to a PDF, I’d be much obliged.
