FLIR IR Systems to Help Fight Bird Flu

Feb 2006--FLIR Systems Odered to Fight Bird Flu

PORTLAND, OR USA-- FLIR Systems has announced that it has received orders for thermal imaging cameras for use in detecting fever, which is a possible indicator of infectious diseases, including avian flu. The French Ministry of Health has ordered systems that will be deployed in six airports throughout France.

The systems will be used to quickly detect the presence of fever in passengers arriving from certain destinations.

A major US technology manufacturing company has also ordered systems for use at its overseas manufacturing facilities. The systems will be used to identify fever in arriving employees. Delivery of the systems will begin immediately.

Flir Systems IR Camer Model A20 Both customers chose the FLIR ThermaCam® A20™ system, which offers software specifically designed for this application. The A20 can be mounted at an optimal location and provide real time thermal data and analytics to inspectors.

"As we did during the SARS outbreak, we are providing a tool to governments and businesses around the world who are preparing to protect their citizens and employees from a potential epidemic. Our cameras offer a discreet and effective way of identifying individuals with elevated body temperatures, helping to detect possible fever and thereby limiting the spread of infectious disease,” commented Earl R. Lewis, President and CEO of FLIR Systems, Inc.

Since 2004, human cases of avian influenza resulting in death have been reported from Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Turkey and Indonesia. Poultry outbreaks were also reported in Malaysia and Laos. At the time of writing, February 2006, outbreaks among poultry have been confirmed in Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Nigeria, Romania, Russia, Thailand, Turkey, and Vietnam. Since then, the number of wird bird infections reported has spread nearly around the entire globe!
