Emerson’s Online Calculation Tool Helps Users Select Thermowells in compliance with the 2010 ASME Standard

MINNEAPOLIS MN, USA — Emerson Process Management has introduced an online thermowell calculation tool that incorporates therecent ASME PTC 19.3 TW standard.

“The new tool offers preliminary calculations and gives users the option to perform a quick pass or fail thermowell calculation,” said Danjin Zulic, temperature marketing engineer, Emerson Process Management. “Users can save time by performing iterative, preliminary calculations to select the right thermowell earlier in the design process.”

The tool is now available free-of-charge at www.rosemount.com/thermowellcalc. Emerson is the first to make available an online tool offering a more automated approach to thermowell calculation as opposed to the traditional way of utilizing spreadsheets.

In addition to the tool, the web site has a link to an R21 Report request form for official evaluations.

“Once the thermowell order is ready to be placed, the official R21 report provides detailed documentation of the thermowell calculation,” Zulic said.

A video and white paper are also available on the web site that explain the new ASME PTC 19.3 TW standard.

Enhancements in the new standards and thermowell calculation tool include different types of stem profiles, more accurate natural frequency equations, and a calculated Strouhal number. The new standard also provides natural frequency correction factors that take into account different components of the thermowell such as the mounting style and temperature sensor mass.

This month the ASME 19.3 Committee released the new standard on thermowells, PTC 19.3 TW – 2010 Thermowells.

As a member of that committee, I struggled to get them to produce the standard as an electronic spreadsheet but because of technical issues, ASME declined to do so.

The object of this Standard is to establish a mechanical design standard for reliable service of tapered, straight, and stepped-shank thermowells in a broad range of applications. This includes an evaluation of the forces due to external pressure, and the combination of static and dynamic forces resulting from fluid impingement. This Standard applies to thermowells machined from barstock, and includes those welded to or threaded into a flange and as well as those welded into a process vessel or pipe with or without a weld adaptor. Thermowells manufactured from pipe are outside the scope of the Standard. Thermowells with specially designed surface structures (e.g., a knurled surface or a surface with spiral ridges) are beyond the scope of this Standard, due to the difficulty of providing design rules with broad applicability for these types of thermowells.  Thermowell attachment methods, standard dimensions, parasitic vibration of a sensor mounted inside the thermowell, and thermal equilibrium of the sensor relative to the process stream are beyond the scope of this Standard. Additionally thermowells fabricated by welding, including flame spray or weld-overlays, at any place along the length of the shank or at the tip are outside the scope of the Standard.

Some companies specialize more than others and there are even organizations that supply only thermowells and related components.The list of vendors below is not exhaustive.

RTD Vendors

RTDs (Resistance Temperature Detectors)  are wire wound and thin film devices that depend on the temperature coefficient of electrical resistance of metals. As the temperature increases, the positive temperature coefficient of the metal produces an increasing resistance value.

You can read more about them and how they work on the companion RTD pages.

Some metals have a nearly ideal, linear coefficient, like platinum . While other materials have more non-linear coefficients, such a copper and nickel.

This page provides links to some of the vendors of these devices.

You may note some redundancy with links on related pages. A good part of that is due to the fact that some vendors supply more than one type of sensor, plus many provide technical, applications and related support to customers and prospective ones.

Reading vendors literature can be a great, but unstructured way, to gain some technical knowledge. The only danger is that it is hard to learn more than the vendor puts in their literature or what their salesperson knows.

That approach can be quite variable but certainly does not make it easy for you to evaluate products without benchmarks.

Some advice (non-definitive): check with more than one vendor and get some education about these sensors from other sources, too.

There are books and courses available. Check your local library’s technical section or a engineering or science library at a university or technical college or school or the ISA or someone on the ASTM E20 Committee on Temperature Measurement.
