Editor's Notes: These are the first new optical pyrometers to be manufactured in the USA in about 20 years. Spectrodyne is not just another catchy name;, they are owned and run by former Leeds and Northrup (L&N) staff who have been supplying calibration and repair services to owners of existing L&N opticals as well as the entire range of hand-held portable radiation thermometers and other IR temperature-measuring devices for about the last 15 years. They have grown steadily over this period and are one of the few companies in the world with the calibration expertise and experience to take on this type of new product. The plan for next month includes looking into a more depth about more eficient management and operation of the web site as well as other background work to make our site more useful and informative to our visitors. In addition we now have a backlog of four temperature measurement-related books to review and hope to have at least one review available in time for the July Newsletter.

COMMENTs and MORE SITE RANKINGS

We review many, many web sites in our course of wandering the Web. What we see is a surprising mix of sites. Most appear to be little more than a static catalog of a company's products and services. We have been very successful in generating large numbers of visitors to our site and it is still growing faster than our most optimistic expectations. According to Alexa , a free rating program one can add to their browser and see site rankings, we are in the first 300,000 web sites ranked according to visitor rate, a major improvement from last month! Our site now ranks just below Sensors Magazine and just above the American Society for Non-Destructive Testing. We are not alone in improving our ratings; many site have, but some have not.

Listed below are a few sites and Alexa ratings we have been collecting since May and April 2002. The ranking starts at the top site, the best being No. 1! Considering that there are more than 17,000, 000 sites on the web, a ranking in the first 1,000,000 seems very laudable while the first 100,000 is an exclusive club-the top 0.5%. Those sites that improved their rankings are in green and those whose rankings diminished (numeric value is higher than last month) are in rose.

Beginning next month we shall limit the tabular data to just the past three months as shown here. In addition a new web page showing the rankings in a graphical format will be added to the temperatures.com web site and display all the rankings of selected sites for the rest of the year. We may need to limit the number of sites to keep the graphical format easy to follow. We recognise that the Alexa rankings are not necessarily the most accurate measure of a sites popularity or even site hits. However, it is an objective ranking based on the more than 5,000,000 users of Alexa and the MS Browser and is accessible by nearly anyone who goes to the Alexa web site to verify the rankings or view those of other sites.

We are teaming up with an experienced web design and marketing firm to aid technical organizations get more out their Web investment.

We believe companies can improve their visitor rate, sale and marketing operations, sales communications and generate more orders through proper focus on their Web resources. The Internet, especially the Web, is a revolutionary new marketing and business tool.
