JMS SwiftyCalc for Thermowells

Design thermowells that last and extend the life of your temperature sensors Image Courtesy: JMS Southeast}>JMS Southeast has developed a program based on the standard that allows you to perform the calculations necessary to determine the suitability of your design for your process conditions with few complications. Just about any type of well can be configured. It is available free to their customers and friends. The JMS SwiftyCalc quickly provides users with a thermowell design based upon your material requirements and process variables that you can count on to meet the updated ASME PTC 19.3-TW (2010) standard Paste this on … Continue reading

NEW ASME Thermowell Standard Plus

A Free Thermowell Calculator From JMS Southeast Based on the Standard This month the ASME 19.3 Committee released the new standard on thermowells, PTC 19.3 TW – 2010 Thermowells. It is available on their website at http://catalog.asme.org/Codes/PrintBook/PTC_193_TW_2010_Thermowells.cfm. As a member of that committee, I struggled to get them to produce the standard as an electronic spreadsheet but because of technical issues, ASME declined to do so. JMS Southeast has developed a program based on the standard that allows you to perform the calculations necessary to determine the suitability of your design for your process conditions with few complications. Thermowell Vendors

Nearly every maker of probe- type temperature sensors offers some sort of thermowell. Some companies specialize more than others and there are even organizations that supply only thermowells and related components. The list of vendors below is not exhaustive. If your company belongs there, click on ADD LINK and let us know. Basic listings for vendors are not free, but reasonably-priced free and, if you notice, we strive to find those technically-aware suppliers that provide free technical information and advice on their web sites. They get special notices and links as you will find when you traverse this site’s pages. Illustrations … Continue reading

Semiconductor Vendors

Semiconductor thermometers are usually produced in the form of ICs, Integrated Circuits. There are many types, sizes and models. Most are quite small and their fundamental design results from the fact that semiconductor diodes have voltage-current characteristics that are temperature sensitive. (That means that semiconductor triodes or transistors are also temperature sensitive.) Needless to say, these devices have temperature measurement ranges that are small compared to thermocouples and RTDs, but, they can be quite accurate (e.g. ± 0.5°C or so) and inexpensive and very easy to interface with other electronics for display and control. Listed below are links to some … Continue reading

Bimetal Vendors

Bimetallic thermometers (Bimetals) are most often seen in people’s pockets, clipped there with the dial indicator facing upwards. They have a sensing shaft about 3 or 4 mm in diameter made of stainless steel. They are great for quick checks of temperature of a product or process, easy to clean and require no batteries. But there are many other bimetals used in processes throughout the world usually unseen because they are inside another piece of equipment. They are mostly found in thermostats, for example, in home and commercial heating/cooling systems. They are used as over temperature protection devices for most … Continue reading

Liquid In Glass Thermometer Vendors

A liquid in glass thermometer is the sensor one visualizes most often for temperature measurement. A glass cylinder with a bulb at one end, a capillary hole down the axis, connected to the reservoir in the bulb filled with silvery mercury or perhaps a red-colored fluid, an engraved temperature scale; that’s what I picture in my mind’s eye as a proper thermometer. There are many designs and a significant range of capabilities and uses of those designs. There are many variants around the world from simple, low cost devices that are used to indicate the “doneness” of a roast or … Continue reading
